Clash of Clans
Strategy
From raging barbarians, to witches, goblins, and ogres. Clash of Clans throws the entire kitchen sink in when it comes to clans clashing. Since its launch in 2012, Clash of Clans has added new features to the game - but the main aim remains the same. The aim is to build up your village to a thriving kingdom. Along the way, you unlock buildings and units to protect your plot from enemy clan attacks. You can also raid other players and steal their resources. Resources that help upgrade your buildings or train troops to grow your army. As you progress, you can join a clan or make your own. Clans can then fight other clans for big rewards. Keeping your village safe from raiding players is a task in itself. It requires strategic placement of buildings, defenses, traps, and walls. It can be the difference between preventing and losing enemy raids. Much like building an army, upgrading buildings need resources. With the resources, it can unlock new units, buildings, or spells. The game is based on a freemium model. That is, the game is free to play, with some features being easier to access through in-app purchases. Such purchases are often brought with real money, rather than currencies earned in-game. One of the premium currencies in the game is gems. Gems are more easy to get through in-app purchases, but the game offers ways to gain these over time. Other ways to gain it is through gameplay progression, such as achievements. Gem boxes can also spawn in your village, but they are often a rare find. Other in-app purchases allow you to gain other resources quicker. This can let you progress the game at a faster pace, getting to the high level content faster. The game is balanced that you don't need to make any purchases to progress. It does make it more convenient to move forward though.

Pandora Radio
Entertainment
Pandora Radio (or just Pandora) is a music streaming service available in selected countries. It allows users to listen to music from Pandora's catalogue either for free with ads, or for a monthly subscription fee. While it is common users play through the mobile app, Pandora also includes web browser support. To begin listening to music, you start a station by choosing an artist, a song, or a combination thereof. This creates a station that then, based on your feedback, will generate a playlist of songs based off the artist and/or song selections. You can then say that you like the song playing with a thumbs up, or not like with a thumbs down. This will then fine tune the song selections moving forward to be closer to your music style. Pandora also includes links to allow you to buy any songs or albums you like direct from iTunes or Amazon. Users can create and save personalized radio stations and playlists within Pandora. You do need to register an account with Pandora, and be at least 13 years of age. Pandora is powered by the Music Genome Project. This ambitious big data project uses around 450 data points to harmoize song selections. Such data points could include harmony, rhythm, instruments played, and more. These data points are used to determine the best songs to add to a radio station users listen to. Due to licensing restrictions of the project, this limits the availability of Pandora to a select few countries. To date, this only includes the United States, Australia and New Zealand. In 2014, Pandora reported they have over 250 million registered users, with 79.9 million monthly active users in 2016. Pandora also has around 70% of the internet radio market in the US.

Facebook
Communication
Facebook started as an online directory of Harvard College students in 2004. As popularity grew, the site expanded to other colleges and Ivy League schools across the US. On September 26, 2006, Facebook allowed anyone to join the social media network. The only requirements were to have a valid email address and be at least 13 years old. Some countries, however, do not allow access to the service. Since the access was open to everyone, Facebook has grown to have 1.86 billion active users each month. It is due to this that Facebook has grown to be the third most popular website in the world, behind YouTube and Google Search. Facebook allows users to post status messages, images, video and links to friends and groups. Each piece of content you publish can be shared with one or more people. You can control who sees your updates The News Feed feature is the main staple of Facebook. This allows you to view content highlights from friends, groups and pages you follow. Algorithms determine what content shows in the feed, much to the frustration of users. Facebook later provided options to allow you to fine tune your personalized feed, by notifying what you want to see more or less of. Another popular element to Facebook is the Like button. It was extended to include several other expressive notions to content. Such options besides Like includes, but is not limited to, Love, Sad, Wow, and Haha (funny). While rumors spread often, Facebook is a free to use service. The rumors were exacerbated further when chain letter posts were shared by thousands of users. The company provides advertising services to businesses to monetize the free service. Effective targeting methods to Facebook users that are interested in the content is one such method. Other services include sending gifts, buying virtual currency for games, or the marketplace.

WhatsApp
Communication
WhatsApp is a simple, free-to-use communications app to send messages to other WhatsApp users. You can send simple text messages, images, video, documents, and make calls. You can start conversations with one person, or create and join group conversations. WhatsApp can use your internet connection instead, helping you reduce your mobile bill. WhatsApp began in 2009 as an idea between Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former employees of Yahoo. Around the time the App Store became a feature on iPhones, Acton and Koum saw the potential apps could have. After buying an iPhone, the pair began working on WhatsApp - a portmanteau of sorts putting "what's up?" and "app" together in one word. WhatsApp shot to success and was bought by Facebook for about $19.3 billion US dollars in 2014. WhatsApp is popular among smartphone users, with over 1 billion people worldwide using the app. This makes WhatsApp the most popular messaging application app in the world. A former popular messaging app, MSN Messenger, only had around 330 million users. One of the main elements to the app that attracts users is the security. WhatsApp maintains a strong, end-to-end encryption of all messages and calls. This means that only the people you chat or speak with will see it. Such encryptions also means the team at WhatsApp can't access your information. To get started, users need to enter in their mobile phone number. This acts as your unique ID on the service. Friends and family that also use WhatsApp can be added to your contact list, if you allow WhatsApp to read your phone contacts. From there, choose the person you want to start a conversation with and start messaging! Whether it's texting a college friend to organize a study group, sending funny GIFs to your friends, or calling family, WhatsApp can do all that, and more.
